This new cultivar is the product of a breeding program in New Zealand. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new Magnolia cultivars that have unusual flower colours. In comparison to the parent plants, 'Cleopatra' is different from the female parent 'Sweet Simplicity' in having a more upright habit, larger diameter branches and purple flowers. 'Cleopatra' is different from the male parent 'Black Tulip' in having a more upright habit, thinner diameter branches and purple flowers. The flowers of 'Black Tulip' are purple-red. Flower Colour is a complex pigmentation of red and purple with bluish undertones and a cristalline sheen which makes it hard to demonstrate the 'true' colour in any electronic media. Grows 10 x 12.
